“Pop Art looks out into the world. It doesn’t look like a painting of something, it looks like the thing itself.“
~Roy Lichtenstein
Only one week left till…. Standard Chartered Arts in the Park 2013!!! HKYAF is super excited!–especially since we have been working with incredibly talented artists, choreographers and performers to bring you the very best in the arts!
The theme for #artsinthepark2013 is Gallery in Motion, where we pay tribute to five of the greatest art movements in history.
On 16 – 17 November 2013 at Victoria Park, you will see that all the artworks and YAF performances have been inspired by the Renaissance, Cubism, Surrealism, Post-impressionism and Pop Art movements.
Siobhan Dumigan, who recently choreographed If Walls Could Talk at The Peninsula, is back again choreographing YAF’s Pop Art dance! We caught her for a quick chat in between rehearsals…
Pop Art as my inspiration…
I took most my inspiration from the artist Roy Fox Lichtenstein’s works Drowning Girl, Sleeping Girl, Kiss,Oh…Alright…, In the Car and Happy Tears. These pieces all portray a conflict in emotion and this is what you see in my choreography.
Picking songs for the piece…
The two songs I chose personify a conflict in emotion perfectly and almost acts like a narration to the choreography.
Challenges during the rehearsal process…
Choreographing with missing people, that is always the biggest challenge. I love to use lots of cannons, partner work and group work in my pieces and it’s always hard to do that when people are not there.
YAF’s Pop Art dance piece…
Pop Art has attitude behind it and I think that’s what brings my choreography to life – the attitude of the dancers. So expect a whirlwind of emotion with attitude!
Listen to Siobhan on RTHK’s活在香港, sharing her experiences growing up in Hong Kong and her life as a dancer and choreographer in this city and beyond. In Chinese only.
See everyone at #artsinthepark2013!!
